Ketchikan Court Docket Case Types

The Ketchikan Superior Court takes cases that require its level of jurisdiction. Felony criminal charges are filed here. So are civil disputes for amounts over $100,000. Domestic relations cases including divorce and child custody are filed in Superior Court. Probate matters and juvenile cases go here as well. When a felony charge originates at the District Court level through a preliminary hearing, it gets transferred to Superior Court for the actual trial.

The District Court in Ketchikan handles the majority of day-to-day case filings. Misdemeanor crimes, DUI cases, minor assaults, petty theft, and similar offenses are District Court matters. Civil cases for amounts under $100,000 are here too. Small claims for amounts under $10,000 follow a simpler process. Traffic violations and minor offenses also come through the District Court. Each case type gets its own suffix code in the case number, making it easy to identify in CourtView.

The Ketchikan court also handles appeals from certain lower-level decisions. Appeals from the District Court go to the Superior Court. From there, parties can petition the Court of Appeals or the Alaska Supreme Court depending on the issue.
