Kenai Peninsula Borough Court Docket Case Types
The Kenai Superior Court has original and general jurisdiction. It takes cases that the District Court cannot: felony criminal charges, civil disputes over $100,000, domestic relations, probate, juvenile matters, and guardianships. A civil case worth $200,000 goes to the Superior Court. A divorce with custody issues goes there too. The docket for a Superior Court case shows all the filings, hearing dates, discovery deadlines, and orders entered throughout the case.
The District Courts at Kenai, Homer, and Seward handle the rest. Misdemeanor criminal cases, civil cases up to $100,000, small claims under $10,000, ordinance violations, and traffic matters all go through the District Courts. Preliminary hearings on felony charges also start at the District Court level before being transferred to the Superior Court for trial.
Criminal records at the court level document what happened in the case from charge through resolution. They are not the same as official criminal history records. For a formal background check in Alaska, contact the Department of Public Safety Criminal Records Bureau at dps.alaska.gov. A name-based check costs $20 and a fingerprint check costs $35 under AS 12.62.160.
