What Anchorage Court Docket Records Contain

Anchorage Municipality court docket records are case files created, collected, and maintained by the Alaska Court System. The content varies by case type. Criminal files may contain charges, arrest information excerpts, bail orders, plea agreements, sentencing documents, and judgments. Civil files hold the complaint, responses, motions, discovery records where filed, scheduling orders, and the final judgment. Family law cases include petitions for divorce or custody, financial affidavits, parenting plan orders, and decrees.

Probate records in Anchorage include wills filed with the court, petitions for administration, inventories of estates, and final settlement orders. Juvenile case records are sealed from public access. Guardianship cases, mental health proceedings, and certain protective order matters may have restricted access depending on their status. For cases that are fully public, the docket entry log shows what documents were filed and when, though reading the actual text of those documents requires a formal copy request.

The Anchorage District Court also handles small claims cases. Small claims dockets show the name of the party filing, the name of the party being sued, the amount in dispute, and the court's judgment. These are quick cases. They do not involve attorneys in most instances. The docket entries are brief. Civil cases over $100,000 appear in the Superior Court docket and typically have much more detailed filing logs.

Public Access Rules for Anchorage Court Dockets

Anchorage court docket records are public under AS 40.25.110. This statute opens public records of all public agencies to inspection during regular office hours. Court records are covered. You do not need a personal connection to a case to search CourtView or request public files. The Alaska Public Records Act at AS 40.25.100 through AS 40.25.295 is the legal basis for public access requests.

Alaska Rules of Administration 37.5 through 37.8 control court record access specifically. These rules define confidential and sealed records. They also set up the framework for remote electronic access. Most records are public. Exceptions include: judicial working papers and notes, sealed orders, records restricted by statute, juvenile case files, adoption records, certain protective orders, and cases where statutory rules require removal from the public index. Rule 37.6 sets out the specific categories of administrative records that are excluded.

Criminal cases resulting in acquittal or full dismissal are removed from CourtView after 60 days under AS 22.35.030. Cases involving alcohol offenses for defendants under 21, charged on or after October 4, 2016, are not published online under AS 04.21.078. Cases where a defendant over 21 was convicted only of possessing less than one ounce of marijuana may also be removed under Rule 40. These same rules apply to all Anchorage courts.
